For adult dogs that require support for chronic or temporarily reduced renal function
ROYAL CANIN® Renal dry is a complete dietetic feed for dogs formulated to support renal function in the case of chronic renal insufficiency, through its restricted levels of phosphorus and high-quality proteins.
Renal diets are recommended as soon as creatinine goes out of reference range (from CKD late stage 2), before the disease further progresses and before inappetence develops. In case of food aversion, the dog can be switched to another renal option without transition. Renal diets may be continued for the dog's lifetime. It is recommended that a full health check be performed every 6 months.
Recommended in cases of: Azotemic Chronic Kidney Disease (IRIS stage 2 to stage 4), Chronic Kidney Disease with proteinuria (IRIS stage 1 to 4).
Not recommended in case of: growth, gestation and lactation. This diet is complete and balanced and can be fed long-term. A full health check should be performed by a veterinarian every 6 months. The diet includes a low level of phosphorus and high quality, highly digestible proteins.
Contains EPA and DHA, a complex of antioxidants and a low phosphorus level. During CKD, phosphorus is no longer eliminated effectively by the kidneys. A restriction in phosphorus intake is essential to slow down the development of renal disease.
Feeding a diet with adapted fish oil (source of EPA/DHA) content is likely to improve the glomerular filtration rate.
Inadequate kidney workload may induce uremic crisis. An adapted content of high quality protein helps reduce kidney workload.
Feeding protein well in excess of the minimum requirements leads to generation of nitrogen waste products, which accumulate in body fluids when renal excretory capacities are reduced.
Chronic kidney disease can lead to metabolic acidosis. Formulated with alkalinizing agents. The kidneys are central to the maintenance of acid base balance. As renal function declines, the capacity to excrete hydrogen ions and reabsorb bicarbonate ions is reduced and metabolic acidosis ensues.
Designed aromatic profile helps answer to dog's specific preference. Appetite issues, food aversion, anorexia, hyporexia, are quite common during CKD.
This diet should be maintained for the dog's lifetime.
It is recommended that a veterinarian’s opinion be sought before use or before extending the period of use. Initially feed Renal dry for up to 6 months in cases of chronic renal insufficiency.
